20-year La Mesa Resident and teacher who wants to restore the fundamental foundation of good education: reading, writing and arithmetic.
With a deep commitment to family values and community enrichment, Myriam understands that strong schools build strong neighborhoods. She is ready to listen to parents, support our educators, and ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed in a safe and welcoming environment.
I've had the privilege of teaching mathematics since 1994, and for over 20 years I've served as a Professor of Mathematics at Southwestern College. Over that time, I've watched math skills decline among incoming students — and I've come to understand that this isn't a college problem, it's an elementary school problem. The foundation has to be built early.
That's why I care so deeply about what's happening in our own backyard: students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley Schools deserve a stronger foundation, not just in math, but in reading and writing too. That conviction — built from two decades in the classroom watching where students struggle and why — is what I'd bring to this board.
According to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress:
36% of LMSV students met or exceeded the standard for Math
48% of LMSV students met or exceeded the standard for English Language Arts
Based on the percentages above, it is clear that our current leadership and focus is failing our children. It is time to refocus on the fundamentals. Myriam will provide that fresh perspective to give our children the best possible opportunity to succeed in today's world. Myriam is dedicated to improving test scores and getting kids back to mastering reading, writing, and arithmetic. By prioritizing essential academics, we can equip our students with the critical thinking skills they need to thrive in the real world.
Your Child, Your Voice: Parents are the primary stakeholders in a child's life. Myriam will fight to make certain parents are kept fully informed of their child's education. She is committed to ensuring that parents' voices are not only heard by the board but actively taken into account when policies are made.
